Under Construction. NOT !

Updated 28th December 2007

The phrase "Under Construction" is something that has bugged me ever since people started putting up web sites in the early days of the web.

I used to describe my site as "SplatterWare" - and I never hid behind the "Under Construction" phrase as an excuse for poor site planning or sloppy coding. Trust me to pick a phrase in regular use - search engines picked up the phrase and lumped me in with a whole bunch of pottery sites, which caused no end of confusion. To avoid any more "got any enamelware ?" questions in my mailbox, I've dropped the name for this iteration of the site.

I won't use the "Under Construction" description though - the site is constantly evolving, so it will never be completed as such...

I haven't gone overboard with graphics, frames, or browser-specific features. I'm painfully aware how expensive it can be for some of my audience to browse web pages, and I don't want to exclude certain users because they're using a different browser to me.

Having said that, it is impossible to produce web pages that will work flawlessly in every browser that's out there, tick every box for accessibility, and still look good, all whilst trying to find time to write and maintain material that people will actually want to look at.

It's all too easy to let presentation get in the way of actual content, and become obsessed with how The Message is going to look, rather than The Message itself.

I've tried to produce a consistent "look-and-feel" for this site, and I've tried to keep it simple. These pages should therefore work with any recent browser, and I've specifically tested the layout with text-only browsers such as Lynx. If you do find that pages on this site don't render properly in your browser, please let me know (just follow the "Contact Chris" link) and I'll try to fix it.

How csking.co.uk was created...

14th August 2005

Over the years, I've used quite a few web authoring tools, ranging from the simple editors bundled with web browsers, and web authoring tools built into modern word processors, right up to full-blown systems like Frontpage and Dreamweaver.

And in my opinion, THEY ALL SUCK.

Sure, they can turn out pages that look pretty enough, but the HTML they produce is truly horrible. Is it any wonder that most modern web sites are slow as hell and that your browser keeps crashing ?

I write all the HTML for my web pages by hand, and this latest iteration has been a real "hair shirt" experience...

Version 6 of www.csking.co.uk was produced using nothing more sophisticated than Windows Notepad, but this version (7.0) was produced from scratch using the "Vim" text editor on a Unix machine, without using the HTML syntax highlighting mode.

That's right, I coded the whole damn thing in a text editor that has changed little in thirty years, and makes the old DOS versions of Word Perfect and Wordstar look fluffy and user-friendly by comparison. I can see some younger members of the audience backing away very slowly, looking around for holy water and wooden stakes... (Come back, children, I don't bite... often...!)
